Author Brian Doyle will join us on Wednesday, November 30, at 7 pm at the library to discuss Mink River. He has received the 2010 Book of the Year Award for Fiction for this novel. Everyone is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.

    • The Friends will hold a Used Book Sale in conjunction with the North Plains Holiday Bazaar on Dec. 3rd from 9am – 4pm at Jessie Mays Community Center. Take advantage of this opportunity to support our library and get a head start on your Christmas gift list. There will also be craft items and baked goods for sale along with a raffle and prizes.

Our 5th annual One Book One Community program is scheduled for February 2012. Over ninety copies of Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese will be distributed for free at the kickoff event on February 4 at 6:30 pm. Ethiopian cuisine and African drumming wil be featured, as well as a short video presentation by the author. Other events during the month will include lectures, a travelogue, a music and dance performance, a book discussion and a movie.

The Friends won a $2000 grant from the Cultural Coalition of Washington County for our One Book One Community program this year. With these additional funds we hope to have our best program ever!

A collection of art work from the Lake Oswego Library community related to the book, Cutting for Stone, was exhibited in our program room during the month of September.

Over $2500 was raised at the very successful Garlic Festival Used Book Sale. In addition there were craft items sold and a quilt raffle that also contributed funds for the library. Another highlight of the festival was the Friends’ parade float entry win of the “Best in Theme” trophy. Many thanks to Mark and Pat Susbauer who chaired both those committees and for everyone’s support.

The Friends pledged to contribute $5000 to the city’s Library Budget to purchase new materials for the collection in the 2011/12 fiscal year. In addition, the Friends also contribute to our library by purchasing refreshments for all the movie nights and treats for our volunteers. A new sign board was purchased to help promote library events.

An Antarctica Travel Presentation on Nov. 9 by Dick and Diane VanGrunsven was very well attended. They were joined by Donald Huffman, a retired snow hydrologist, who shared his slides and experiences at the Scott Base, Antarctica.

    • We invite everyone to attend our next bi-monthly meeting on Monday, December 12, 7pm at the library.
